The Morning After The Big Move: We're In Business

I hear something strange. It’s a motor, but not a car motor. I realize it’s our tractor. I also note that it’s not quite light outside yet. It’s about 5:00 a.m. (which soon becomes our ‘new normal’ wake-up call). I look out the bedroom window and I can see Vermont coming into view with the early morning light. I notice in the distance a group of windowed lights strung together like pearls on our neighbors’ barn to the South, just over the border a couple of kilometers away (or from their side, about a mile): a dairy-farming family. We only discover this later on, when we take a trip over the U.S. border crossing to go and introduce ourselves.As my gaze shifts over to our orchard that lies to the east of our house, I can see that the orchard manager is on the tractor and is already up mowing the grass under the apple trees. The sounds of the country are really different from what I’ve always been used to in the city: garbage trucks, buses stopping and starting, people talking and laughing, cars honking, sirens wailing…these have all been replaced, by …well, by the tractor.
